Successful Open Heart Surgery for an International Patient in Bojnord Marks a Milestone in Health Tourism
The long-standing aspiration of developing health tourism in North Khorasan has now become a tangible reality. What was once envisioned as a goal has today taken shape in the form of a remarkable achievement. In the latest step forward, a 66-year-old woman from Turkmenistan, who had traveled to Bojnord due to severe cardiac failure, was admitted to Imam Hassan (AS) Hospital on Wednesday and successfully underwent open-heart surgery performed by the medical team of North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences.

According to Webda, this highly complex and delicate surgery was carried out by Dr. Sobhaniyan, a distinguished cardiac surgeon of the university, with complete success. The patient is currently in stable condition and under monitoring in the Cardiac ICU.
Speaking with Webda, Dr. Esmaeil Garivani, Director of International Affairs at North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences, emphasized that “today, health tourism in this province has moved beyond words and has been realized in practice. This success is the outcome of synergy and cooperation among provincial managers.”
He further underlined that this achievement represents the official entry of North Khorasan into the competitive arena of international health tourism, noting: “From now on, we can confidently declare that the province has the capacity to treat international patients with competitive pricing and outstanding quality of care.”
Dr. Garivani also referred to the infrastructural measures undertaken, stating: “Through the foresight and follow-up of the university chancellor, the Deputy for Treatment, and the cooperation of the provincial Chamber of Commerce, the implementation of competitive healthcare tariffs has been approved. This means international patients can now receive treatment in North Khorasan at significantly lower costs compared to neighboring countries. This is the realization of Article 72 of the Seventh Development Plan and a practical step toward sustainable provincial development.”
He reminded that the benefits of health tourism extend far beyond the healthcare sector, contributing directly and indirectly to the growth of the province’s tourism industry, the promotion of local culture and capacities, and the strengthening of the regional economy. He added that the advantages of this path will be shared by the entire province, particularly through supporting the tourism sector and creating new opportunities across multiple fields.
