North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences (NKUMS)
North Khorasan University of Medical Sciences (NKUMS) was officially established in 2008 following the national division of the former Khorasan Province into three separate provinces in 2004.
The development of medical education in the region began in 2005 with the establishment of the School of Public Health, Nursing, and Midwifery, followed by the launch of the School of Medicine later that year. By 2008, with the approval of the Ministry of Health and Medical Education, the institution was upgraded to a full-fledged university of medical sciences.
Imam Ali and Imam Reza hospitals were designated as teaching hospitals to support the educational mission of the newly founded university. In 2011, Dr. Mohammadreza Majdi was appointed as the first official chancellor and representative of the Ministry of Health in the province. Over the years, the university has expanded its academic and clinical scope significantly.
Currently, NKUMS includes 7 schools offering 22 academic disciplines, covering areas such as Medicine, Dentistry, Public Health, Nursing, Emergency Medicine, and more. The university also operates 7 vice-chancelleries, 7 health networks, and 9 hospitals, serving as the primary provider of healthcare and medical education in North Khorasan Province under the leadership of Dr. Seyed Ahmad Hashemi, the current chancellor.
The university's independent Board of Trustees was formed in 2007, following its separation from the joint board with Sabzevar and Gonabad Universities. The official logo of NKUMS, symbolizing the cultural and scientific heritage of the region, was adopted in 2005 and remains in use today.
In 2014, Esfarayen School of Medical Sciences became an independent institution, further contributing to the expansion of medical education across the region.
